My Screen-Free Vacation

I'm looking back on a screen-free vacation. That means no laptop, no iPhone or BlackBerry, no Wi-Fi.

I'm no neo-Luddite. I love my laptop and iPhone because they give me mobility and freedom to work from anywhere I want. My virtual office has no walls. And I like that.

But I also like being able to temporarily bail out -- and the fresh perspective that the break provides.

I am a mother. And that makes me, in the eyes of my teenager, inherently, irrevocably and irredeemably uncool. But for one halcyon moment a few summers ago, I wasn't. What was my vehicle to momentary redemption? A red Mustang convertible, top down, its Sirius satellite radio blasting, as we drove, wind whipping our hair, into summer.

This land of almost unearthly beauty also is so inhospitable to man that much of this area -- Zion National Park, Bryce Canyon National Park, Canyon Reef National Park, Arches National Park and Bridges National Monument -- was never home to anyone beyond itinerant hunting parties, until Brigham Young sent intrepid Mormon pioneers to transform this desolate landscape with fields of cotton and orchards of fruit.

Sometimes, amidst the sturm und drang of our lives today, it’s easy to forget how a vacation gives you new perspectives on yourself and your world. We discovered that one August evening a few years back when we slipped into London Heathrow just before authorities discovered a plot to blow up planes over the Atlantic. As airports locked down worldwide, we were touring the town of Windsor where a guide complained bitterly about the damage to the royal farms wrought by Oliver Cromwell as if it were yesterday.
